Sydney didn’t just help Aria find her voice; she helped her believe it mattered.

When Sydney first met Aria nearly two years ago, she met a girl of few words- shy, reserved, and slow to trust. But where some might have seen hesitation, Sydney saw potential. With quiet patience and unwavering consistency, she began showing Aria what it meant to be seen, heard, and believed in.

From the beginning, Sydney understood that building trust would take time. So she met Aria exactly where she was, never rushing, always listening. Whether they were coloring, cooking, or working on school projects at Sydney’s house, every moment together added another layer of comfort and connection. It was in these quieter spaces, watching a movie or making a Valentine’s Day box, that something began to shift. Aria slowly started to open up, sharing more of herself, talking freely, and smiling more often. For Sydney, those were the real milestones.

Over time, their bond deepened through shared experiences, some challenging, some just plain fun. One day, they went rock climbing, an exciting new adventure for Aria. With her harness on and eyes set on the top, she began to climb. A few fear up, fear crept in, and she stopped short. Sydney and Aria plan to rock climb again and Sydney’s goal is to teach Aria that she can overcome her mental blocks and do hard things.

Ordering her own food at restaurants, once a daunting task, became an exercise in independence. Speaking up for herself, a goal her mom had hoped she would learn, soon came more naturally. At a recent parent-teacher conference, her teachers noted that Aria had become good at standing up for herself, a quiet but powerful victory. Sydney had been planting seeds of self-confidence from the start and now, they were beginning to bloom.

Aria shared she feels comfortable talking to Sydney, saying she listens and Aria’s mom describes Sydney as an asset to Aria. And for Sydney, the feeling is mutual. She’s seen Aria grow not just in confidence, but in trust and joy. Sydney says their relationship keeps getting better month after month and is excited to help her transition into middle school and be there through the next chapter.

What began as a match between a hesitant young girl and a compassionate mentor has become a deeply meaningful relationship, one built on understanding, patience, and the kind of love that shows up again and again. Sydney didn’t just help Aria find her voice; she helped her believe it mattered.

Match Monday- Camy & RiCari

Sometimes it's just about showing up.

When Camy first met RiCari, she was met with a quiet smile and a shy hello. But Camy, a college student with a warm heart and a steady spirit, knew that showing up consistently could build something beautiful.

And she did. Week after week, Camy rang the doorbell, greeted by RiCari’s growing excitement, chatter, and hugs. What started as a cautious connection quickly bloomed into a deep, joyful bond- one built on trust, laughter, and showing up, even when miles apart.

When summer break came and Camy returned home, the distance could’ve created space. Instead, it created a new kind of connection. They Facetimed together while playing Roblox, Drawing with Friends, and sent iMessage games back and forth like digital care packages. Camy made it clear: no matter the distance, she wasn't going anywhere.

Their goal as a match was simple and powerful: to try new things together. From roller skating to volleyball, pasta-making to pumpkin carving (a first for RiCari), obstacle courses to trampoline parks, their adventures became rituals of discovery and fun. Each new activity helped RiCari come out of her shell a little more. At restaurants, Camy would gently encourage her to order her own ice cream, small moments that built big confidence.

But Camy’s impact didn’t stop at outings. When RiCari joined cheerleading, Camy showed up at games and competitions, just to be in the crowd, cheering her on. “I think it helped her feel more confident in herself to have someone out there rooting for her”. Today, RiCari speaks up more and expresses herself with more confidence.

At home, her mom sees it too, saying she never stops talking about Camy and always asks when she’ll see her again. That excitement, that eagerness is the mark of a relationship that’s not just fun, but life-changing.

One of the most touching moments came in the form of a handwritten letter. In it, RiCari told Camy that she loved her and was so thankful to have her as her Big Sister. For Camy, the words meant everything, saying it’s nice knowing someone appreciates what you do.

But the greatest transformation lies in the everyday. The doorbell rings, and now, a bubbly, confident RiCari bounds to greet her Big Sister with a grin. They laugh, they talk, they explore, and they keep growing, together.

Camy’s commitment, creativity, and quiet strength have helped a young girl blossom and reminded all of us that what matters most in mentorship isn’t perfection, but presence. For all the moments they’ve created, the confidence they’ve built, and the love that’s grown between them, Camy and RiCari are more than a match; they’re a shining example of what’s possible when someone simply chooses to show up.

Match Monday- Taha & Tayden

“I see you. I’m here for you. Let’s grow together.”

When Taha first met Tayden just over a year ago, he didn’t come in with grand gestures or lofty promises. Instead, he brought something far more impactful—consistency, kindness, and a firm belief that every young person has untapped potential waiting to be discovered. From the start, Taha made it clear that he was there to help Tayden unlock that potential.

In the beginning, Tayden was struggling academically, failing three classes. But Taha showed up, week after week, not only to support him with schoolwork but also to build his confidence and sense of belonging. Taha made Tayden feel seen, heard, and supported. With steady encouragement and some patient tutoring, Tayden's grades improved significantly, ending the year with a B, C, and D. For Tayden, it wasn’t just about better report cards; it was about reclaiming pride in his progress.

Their bond grew not only through study sessions but through shared adventures, especially when it came to food. The duo set out to try every donut shop in Lexington, ultimately creating their own top-three list of favorites. Along the way, Taha used those moments to share life lessons—talking about staying active, making balanced choices, and finding discipline even while enjoying the fun stuff. It was mentorship disguised as donuts, and it resonated deeply.

Like all journeys, theirs has had some challenges. Tayden recently made a tough choice that wasn’t in his best interest. When Taha learned about it, he didn’t respond with judgment, he responded with support and guidance. He reminded Tayden that our mistakes don’t define us; it’s how we learn and grow from them that truly matters.

Their relationship deepened through shared experiences: learning to rock climb, cheering each other on as they reached new heights—literally and figuratively. Taha taught Tayden how to swim, and Tayden returned the favor by teaching Taha how to shoot hoops at an arcade. Through these experiences, they built trust, respect, and a lot of joy.

Over time, Tayden began to open up in ways he rarely does. He shared with others that he feels comfortable talking to Taha—something he doesn’t often feel with many people. His grandmother has noticed the change, too. She’s seen how their time together brings positive energy and how Taha’s mentorship has made a lasting impact.

When Tayden said he wanted to get stronger, Taha didn’t just offer encouragement—he took him to work out at the YMCA. When Tayden shared that his mind raced at night, Taha taught him breathing exercises to help him calm down. These small, thoughtful actions—done consistently—have helped Tayden become more confident, focused, and resilient.

One of the most telling moments came when Tayden was asked what goal he wanted to work on next. Without hesitation, he said, “I want to get even closer to my Big Brother.” That simple sentence says everything.

Taha and Tayden’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when mentorship is rooted in patience, presence, and genuine care. In just over a year, Tayden has gone from a struggling student to a motivated learner, from hesitant to adventurous. And through it all, Taha has been there—steadily guiding, gently challenging, and always believing in what’s possible.

This story is more than a success—it’s a reminder of the lasting impact one person can have by simply showing up and saying, “I see you. I’m here for you. Let’s grow together.”

Spotlight on BBBSBG Intern and UK Student Athlete Kahlil Saunders

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, we’re proud to work with a wide range of incredible individuals who are passionate about giving back to their community. This semester, we’ve been lucky to have one of University of Kentucky’s own student- athletes join our team as an intern.

Meet Kahlil Saunders, a senior at the University of Kentucky, standout defensive lineman (#92) on the UK Football team, and one of our newest interns here at

BBBSBG. Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, and a graduate of Grissom High School, Kahlil is the oldest of four siblings — a natural leader on and off the field.

So, what brought Kahlil to Kentucky?

“The opportunity to play in the SEC which will help me build my skillset and potentially lead to a career in the NFL. I was also looking for a community where I could get

involved and give back” he says.

And give back, he has. Kahlil chose to intern with BBBSBG because he wanted to make a real impact.

“I didn’t have a mentor growing up and would’ve liked to have had an impactful adult from outside of my family in my life,” he shares. “Being able to be part of an organization that makes that happen for kids means a lot to me.”

During his time with BBBSBG, Kahlil has gotten involved with community events, supported match activities, and has participated in many meetings with local

businesses. His favorite event so far? Bowl for Kids’ Sake, our largest peer-to-peer fundraiser.

“It was such a fun event with great energy and a real sense of purpose. You could feel the community coming together to fundraise for our Matches” he says.

After college, he hopes to play in the NFL — a dream well within reach given his talent and determination. But his ambitions don’t end there. “After the NFL, my dream job is to become an exotic veterinarian”. Yes, you read that right! Kahlil is the proud owner of a snake named Gucci and a dog named Princess- a duo that’s as unique and delightful as he is! And when he’s not on the field or in the community, Kahlil also enjoys drawing-a fun fact that highlights just how multi-talented he is.

When asked about his favorite thing in Lexington, his answer came quickly: “The UK fan base, of course! There’s nothing like the Big Blue Nation to feel like you’re

an immediate part of this community. They welcomed me from the day I stepped foot on the field, and I’ll never forget them.”

From the gridiron to the mentoring world, Kahlil Saunders brings heart, purpose, and a deep sense of responsibility to everything he does. We’re proud to have him as part of the BBBSBG family and can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next, both in football and beyond.

Bigs, Littles, and Pasta: A Perfect Recipe for Fun!

On January 21, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass (BBBSBG) hosted a pasta-making party that brought Bigs and Littles together for an evening filled with fun, fellowship, and, of course, delicious food! The event was generously sponsored by Heirloom , a Midway favorite, with Chef Jacob Cox leading the charge as our culinary guide.

An Unforgettable Experience
From kneading dough to crafting perfectly shaped pasta, Bigs and Littles got hands-on experience in the kitchen. The event was an absolute blast, as matches interacted, learned new skills, and enjoyed quality time with one another. Chef Jacob created an inviting and inspiring environment, showing that cooking is not just a skill but also a way to connect with others.

Meet Chef Jacob Cox
Chef Jacob has been a key part of the Heirloom team for two years. His journey into the culinary world is as inspiring as the dishes he creates. Growing up, Jacob dreamed of becoming a chef, but the cost of culinary school made him put that dream on hold. However, his love for food never faded. Starting as a dishwasher, he worked his way up, learning from talented chefs along the way.

One of those chefs is Benjamin Smith, Heirloom’s Executive Chef, whom Jacob credits as a mentor. “I’ve been very lucky to learn from and work with a multitude of talented chefs, but Benjamin has taught me so much in the short time we’ve been working together,” Jacob shared.

Jacob’s favorite part of being a chef? “When I make a dish that someone loves. Seeing someone really enjoy a plate of my food and brighten their day makes it all worth it. Also, getting to taste everything you make is a close second!”

Inspiring Littles to Dream Big
The pasta-making party wasn’t just about food—it was about inspiring Littles to believe in themselves and their dreams. Chef Jacob emphasized this, saying, “You can be a chef or anything else you want to be if you put your mind to it and try your best. I was so happy to share a bit of what I do with the Littles and hopefully inspire some of them to follow their dreams.”

The event was a beautiful reminder of how mentorship and shared experiences can make a difference. Whether it’s in the kitchen or in life, BBBSBG continues to create opportunities that spark inspiration and build connections.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass Selected as 2025 Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards® Grant Recipient

[Lexington, KY] (Jan. 15, 2025) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass (BBBSBG), a nonprofit mentoring organization dedicated to creating and supporting one-to-one relationships to ignite the biggest possible futures for youth in Central Kentucky, has been selected to receive a $125,000 grant as part of the 2025 Chick-fil-A True
Inspiration Awards® program. With this generous award, BBBSBG plans to enhance its programs, specifically expanding mentorship opportunities, and providing youth with access to experiences and support systems that will help them reach their full potential.

"We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from Chick-fil-A and thank local owner operator, Joe Turner, for nominating us," said Meredith Watts, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass. "This grant will allow us to strengthen and grow our mission to connect more children with caring mentors who help them build the confidence, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed. We are incredibly grateful for Chick-fil-A’s continued support and for their commitment to investing in organizations that make a lasting difference in our communities."

BBBSBG is one of 56 nonprofit organizations selected to receive a portion of the $6 million in grants being awarded through the True Inspiration Awards. These grants are given to organizations addressing critical community issues that align with Chick-fil-A’s social responsibility priorities, including Caring for People, Caring for Others through Food, Caring for Our Communities, and Caring for Our Planet.

The True Inspiration Awards were established in 2015 to carry on Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy’s legacy of generosity and community service. In the past ten years, 357grants ranging from $30,000 to $350,000, have been distributed to organizations located across the U.S. as well as Puerto Rico, Canada and the U.K.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass Appoints Meredith Downey Watts as Executive Director

LEXINGTON, KY—Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass (BBBSBG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Meredith Downey Watts as Executive Director, effective January 1, 2025.

Meredith joined BBBSBG in January 2022 as Major Gifts Officer, where she played a pivotal role in enhancing the organization's fundraising efforts. In October 2024, she assumed the position of Interim Executive Director, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication to the agency's mission.

A native of Versailles, Kentucky, Meredith holds a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Strategic Communication from the University of Kentucky. Her professional background includes significant experience in community engagement and fundraising.

"We are thrilled to have Meredith lead BBBSBG as Executive Director," said Abe Mashni, Board Chair of BBBSBG. "Her commitment to our mission and her proven track record in fundraising and leadership make her the ideal person to guide our organization into the future."

Meredith's tenure as Interim Executive Director was marked by successful events and creative initiatives that strengthened BBBSBG's programs and community presence. Ja’Zayah and Jenn

Matched since April 2023, Ja’Zayah (LS) and Jennifer (BS) share a bond built on consistent meetings and creative experiences. Jennifer, inspired by her own childhood mentors, has introduced Ja’Zayah to unique activities like yoga, salt caves, arts and crafts, and festivals. Eligible to families experiencing homelessness (includes living temporarily with a friend or relative, in a car, or in a hotel)

FCPS will provide assistance with a security deposit and first month’s rent for eligible families that have found an apartment or home to rent

Apply by contacting your child’s school and getting in touch with the Family Resource Center or McKinney Vento point of contact

After applying, eligible families will be referred to the Goodwill Lexington Opportunity Center for program orientation, case management, and apartment search assistance. All payments made directly to the landlord by Goodwill.
